This is one of those records that you can take to your grave. Arguably Yusef Lateef's most popular and well-received works, Eastern Sounds is one of those albums that you will be constantly going back to like a Love Supreme or a Kind Of Blue. As the title suggests, Lateef explores Eastern modes, but in a very accessible way. Check out the nostalgia-invoking "The Plum Blossom" or the rich, musky sounds of "Blues For The Orient." That's some serious soul jazz. "Snafu" with its instantly recognizable sax intro could be the defining track of the album, much like "Giant Steps." On the other side of the spectrum, check Yusef's delicate flute play on "Love Theme From The Robe," that'll put a tear in your eye. 9 tracks in all, recommended.
